2017 - Yioula Glassworks Group

Intranet application for management of glass bottle molds.

The project was implemented for the Production Division of the Group and was an intranet application. It was operated through the VPN of the Group, and only authorized technicians from the factories of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania had access to it. The application dealt with the full management of the molds used by the Group's industries to produce bottles. It kept detailed information on the specifications of each set of molds and watched each set from the day of his order to the manufacturer until the day of his withdrawal. During the life of the set, it kept a record of its uses in each industry, its repairs, engineer reports, quantities and bottle codes produced with it, and automatically sent out alert messages to production managers whenever they were out of acceptable quality specifications.

2015 - University of Thessaly, Laboratory of Rural Space

Installation of web, application, database and GPS tracking server. GPS tracking server connection to mobile telephony provider for receiving coordinates. Website construction and maintenance.

Core of the certification system was the construction of a system monitoring the livestock in natural grasslands as a supplier of the raw material (milk) of the products.

The constructed system records the movement of the flocks, and represents their movement in Google maps to demonstrate the grazing sites, the altitude, the flora of the area, information that support better marketing of the products, but also further scientific research. The website is supported by a database and for its management a content management system (CMS) was constructed.

The application forms the respondent information in unified reports to the management of the Research Committee. The application works automatically in the background, without needing human manipulation, so the lack of image.

A small website was also built to provide more complete information to interested scientists and to process incoming messages and participation declarations.

2003 - University of Thessaly, Laboratory of Demographic and Social Analysis

Project: e-Demography

The e-Demography project was an important project, whose implementation took many years and a great number of lab scientists - collaborators were involved.

The aim of the project was to collect, digitize, organize, import into a database and publish on the internet all available demographic data of Greece from 1940 until today. The data is available at many spatial levels (country, regions, prefectures) and in particular those of recent censuses even at municipality and settlement level. The data are presented dynamically in the form of numerical tables, graphs, and demographic maps and complex algorithms have been coded to calculate demographic indicators. The website, we built, is supported by a database, of more than 20 million records, and for its updating we added the most complex version of our content management system (CMS).

The project was presented at Scientific Conference of Cartography and in the scientific journal of the Hellenic Society for Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

For the full implementation of the project:

  • We wrote the IT part of the total application for financing from the Greek ministry of Education.
  • We were responsible for all the implementation of the project from its design with the scientists of the Laboratory until its full operation and today its maintenance and updating.
  • We setup the necessary infrastructure (web, application and database server).
  • We designed and built the big database.
  • We built all the software of the big site (demographic portal).
  • We customized and extended the software of our Content Management System (CMS) to adapt to project specifications.
  • We supervised the work of the Laboratory partners in the digitization of the massive data volume being given by the Greek Statistics Authority.
  • We trained the lab staff on the use of our Content Management System.
  • We had and continue to have a leading role in new projects extending the current one to new interesting scientific fields, as well as to major modifications as the one that made the project adapt and accept data based on the new administrative changes of the country, such as the "Kallikratis" project of the Ministry of Interior.
  • We built a lab public relations management system mainly as a basis for bulk emailing to thousands of recipients, informing them on laboratory studies on demographic developments in the country. These lab studies are sent only in digital form and under the general title “DemoNews”. Recipients of these bulk sent studies are all the Members of the Parliament, political parties, social and scientific bodies, university professors, TV and radio stations, newspapers and popular blogs.

It is worth mentioning that for the implementation of graphs and demographic maps, we used the SVG (Scalar Vector Graphics) technology. An Adobe technology, at that time, being too new and unknown, that we had seen as having widespread recognition in the future, as opposed to Flash which was the market leader at that time. Today, SVG has been adopted as a global standard by the W3 consortium as an integral part of HTML-5, and Flash has disappeared even from its own maker. Even though our views were heretic, the facts justified our predictions.

1998 - Prefecture of Magnesia

Real-time online streaming results of local elections, construction and web-hosting

The purpose of the project was the real-time online transmission of the results of the Municipal and Prefectural elections of 1998. The project had to be implemented at a minimal cost despite its high demands on bandwidth. The inadequate internet bandwidth availability at that time in a provincial city created reasonable risks of collapse of whatever infrastructure we could install in Magnesia for the project.

That's why we used Internet infrastructure in the US. The nature of the project did not require dynamic production of pages in the real-time concept, since they could be renewed for example every 3 minutes. Knowing Coldfusion's ability to run FTP tasks automatically, we had the idea that the web server and the application server do not have to co-exist within the same web-hosting provider's network. This made it possible for us to choose anywhere in the US the best for them that was available.

So as a web server that would respond to the extreme number of requests, we chose a powerful IRIX-Unix Silicon Graphics Indy web server in Florida, and for application server a Coldfusion server in New York. Throughout the election night, the Coldfusion server was receiving newer FTP data from Volos Greece, was using them updating static web page templates, and automatically was opening FTP connection to Florida, where was sending the static pages ready to be served to the users by the web server there. The whole system worked with absolute success as we had planned it.

1996 - Prefecture of Magnesia

Real-time online streaming results of Parliamentary elections, construction and web-hosting

The project was the real-time online transmission of the results of the Parliamentary elections of 1996.

It was then the "primitive" era of the internet and there were no special programming tools. There was no experience with such projects and, moreover, the project had to be implemented with a minimum budget. It should be noted that neither the today well known “Delta IT company” nor the Ministry of the Interior had ever attempted to implement a project like that. All these made the project innovative and risky.

The software application was built with Clipper 5.2 !!! Every few minutes it was reading the newer txt data files as they were being extracted from the Prefecture's back-end system, and using HTML page templates it was building the final HTML files including newer data. Then the updated pages were being sent to FTP on a Linux web server being hosted on the only one then local ISP.

The project was completely successful, and received praise from local and national media. It was the very first broadcast of online election results in Greece.
